DJ/ Producer / Remixer / Promoter / Label Owner
Yousef is a complete force within house music. More so than many of his peers, he has become to represent the complete ethos of the modern DJ, absorbing a litany of responsibilities and roles alongside the primary goal of DJ, that of sharing music with others. New sounds, new developments and new frontiers; they all remain an instrumental part of his thrust forward as one the planet’s leading underground House Music tastemakers.
You can’t discuss Yousef and not mention his world-renowned club events Circus. Now proudly in its second decade of activity, it has quickly become one of the most important soirees of its kind in Europe, patenting a formula that combines the established alongside the future stars of the underground. As well as putting on every icon of the industry worth seeing (stand up Carl Cox, Ricardo Vilalobos, Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin, Sasha, Marco Carola and many more) it has been instrumental in the early and developing careers of Jamie Jones, Eats Everything, Loco Dice, Maya Jane Coles, Seth Troxler and Davide Squillace. As well as Liverpool it is now also well established in London, with residencies inked in Madrid, New York, and Birmingham all staying true to Yousef’s musical vision.
This summer Yousef takes Circus to Ibiza for a debut season residency at the newest and most talked about rave den on the Island “Bomba” where he and his partner Richard McGinnis team up with Ibiza club royalty Danny Whittle and Mark Netto to begin a project to further develop the Circus message.
Yousef says ‘having played in Ibiza for many years as either part of Carl Cox’s Space events or as a guest of DC10, the opportunity was presented to bring Circus to the Island as a stand alone event this summer. We felt this came right at the crucial moment in the Circus ascendancy, excited does not describe the feeling really. Musically we will be taking the Circus soundtrack and transposing that to the Island and working with the friends and family that have supported us over the last 10 years, its as daunting as it is exciting!”
The clubnight has also spurned a record label, with 2013 set to be the most defining year so far for Circus Recordings. Having already pushed music by Sven Vath, Four Tet, Gilles Peterson, DJ Sneak and Santos alongside new school names like Maher Daniel, Tom Flynn, Yostek and Doomwork, David Glass and Acid Mondays. 2013 has and will see releases from Green Velvet, Davide Squillace, Tim Green, Nic Fanciuilli, Guti, Carl Cox, Scuba, Eats Everything and many more via the much talked about Circus X campaign, where Yousef has invited the friends of Circus to make a new track for the label to reflect the relationship they have.
Of course a flurry of fresh-faced names Yousef has himself discovered join Circus Recordings too, continuing his commitment to contributing to the scene as much more than a music playing titan.
This impact as a gateway for high-grade dancefloor driven electronica translates to his weekly radio show 21st Century House Music, currently syndicated to 20 different nations with more territories signing up weekly. The mantra is simple, supporting new, fresh and of course good quality house, techno and electronica, across the full spectrum of the genres every week. It already boasts a legion of listeners both via the stations that broadcast it and the Soundcloud uploaded podcasts each week, essential listening for any fan of modern electronic music.
2012 saw a second Yousef artist album. ‘A Product of Your Environment’ received incredible reviews including Ibiza Voice’s album of the year and Mixmag the all genre top 20 albums of the year. The organic development of the music was enough for Defected to invest in taking it to a wider audience, building on their previous commitments to taking the beats of Guti, Nick Curly, Marc Kinchen (MK), even Loco Dice and Hot Since 82. It was the latter’s remix of Yousef’s own ‘Beg’ which bothered the upper echelons for the Beatport charts, reaching number 1 in deep house for 8 weeks. Yousef now has a sound that was borne in the ethos of underground clubs but musical enough to cross over beyond the thud of the modern dancefloor.
A trio of releases for Defected was agreed with two more powerfull and poignant vocal records picked up “think twice” and “I see”. Two sophisticated compositions that show Yousef’s intricate production values.
A new project where Yousef has teamed up with fresh, unknown yet super talented songstress “The Angel” is creating all sorts of hype from the underground outwards. The first single “float away” was instantly snapped up for a global release via Warner Brothers Music by its two leading A&R men Damian Lazarus and Pete Tong.
Even deep into a creative streak Yousef’s heart is always kept in the authentic dance floors via his own Circus Recordings and series of remixes for Get Physical and Crosstown Rebels.
Of course all this embellishes Yousef’s natural role of the world class DJ. Recent key gigs on home soil included the Warehouse Project and Global Gathering, where his kaleidoscopic approach has been brilliantly showcased. His European pedigree continues with strong followings across the continent – Fabrik in Madrid, Kristal in Bucharest, El Row in Barcelona, Kiesgrube in Nuess and of course Ibiza,
He continues to etch his name in the folklore of South American clubbing with endless stops in Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Brazil, the latter boasting D-Edge, Warung and the recently opened branch of Space as Yousef destinations.
Worldwide festivals continue in 2013 with Ultra Music Festival in Korea, Brazil, Croatia and of course Miami as well as a closing stage debut at the 100,000 people attended “Electric Daisy Carnival” (EDC) in Las Vegas. Yousef is really tackling the North American club scene with key gigs in New York, San Diego, LA, Vancouver, Montreal, Boston and Chicago in the first quarter on 2013.
His style is perfectly suited for the dance floor dexterity that is essential in the modern clubspace, bringing the seductive groove and swing of classic house just as readily as the energy of techno, constantly maintaining the vibe of an authentic DJ over 3 decks without a computer in sight. Whether going straight for the jugular or being more deft and subtle, Yousef remains technically and musically peerless, one of the globe’s finest masters of a four-four beat.
A 21st century artist in scope, sound and stance, his lust for electronic music as a producer, promoter, DJ, record label owner and music enthusiast is stronger than ever. His efforts are thoughtful and considered and all approached with meaning – Yousef is there to educate as well as entertain. There are few who balance musical maturity with an exciting creative edge, with the experience informed from his illustrious past combining with a forward thinking surge to the future ensuring a philosophy that will never lose its allure. The man remains an unstoppable juggernaut of electronic music.
